I do highly recommend this book to anyone .Whether you watch the BBC show Sherlock, have seen the Robert Downey Jr Sherlock movies, have seen or read any adaptions, or are just looking for a long series to read; read the Sherlock Holmes story. They really are these timeless stories that tell this story of this man who has this almost super hero ability of solving crimes in the most outrageous way. Sherlock basically invented the archetype for a private detective, being this very intelligent, very curious, and very arrogant man.
This image really portrays the since of the new coming together with the old. The Benedict Cumberbatch Sherlock is the most recent adaption and the BBC Sherlock is a quite brilliant show. Of course he doesn't have every characteristic of the original Sherlock: He doesn't really like wearing the deerstalker hat, he doesn't smoke, and he's quite young which is rare in any adaption of Sherlock Holmes. So instead of being the shadow of the original Sherlock, he is the person casting it. This represents how they are the same but he is the main center of attention now.
The thing that sets Sherlock apart from any random cop show you see on tv is that he doesn't have any boundaries. At the end of the case, he doesn't always have to call the cops to slap the cuffs on the perpetrator. Some of the cases that he gets make you really question whether a crime committed was for a good cause or not. Like in The Man with the Twisted Lip, a man who dressed and painted himself up as a disabled beggar, " any beggar in the streets of London could earn 700 pounds a year-which is less than my average takings"(94). Of course this man had a wife and kids to feed so that's why he chose to sacrifice his pride and sit in the streets for begging. In the end Sherlock does manage to make him a deal to get him out of prison as long as he doesn't do it again.
The thing that amazes me is that he just went on his word that he wouldn't do it again. Sure he could dress up differently and sit on a different side of town, but Sherlock just felt like he wouldn't do it again. Was it really right for him to impersonate a homeless person when there really are homeless people out there who really do need that money he's earned? Its these questions that make you really think about the judgement of Sherlock Holmes.

In Conclusion, anyone out there should read these stories.
